I love when a main character has a mental hardship because they immediately become so much more real and relatable to me. I started reading this story as the news of the outside world was covering a parallel story about a girl who was raped while on the Stanford campus. While the outside world was furious with how the situation was handled, I was getting the girls perspective of the aftermath to how the situation had affected her now years later.
I liked that a writer is the main character so you get to feel like a writer as well vicariously living through why and how she writes as she struggles with deadlines and comes up with new plots. It feels like more of the author is poured into stories that involve writers because they might portray more of themselves in that character. I enjoyed the struggle of the story. It did have some quite explicit scenes, but what can you expect from a girl that writes about kinky sex, but hasn’t had any for three years.
The one thing I didn’t mind was since the main character is a writer she gets to the point that she puts it out there for the reader that she feels tonight something will happen that will change the relationship like a pivotal moment in a book. The main character spoiled her own stories twist before it even happened, which for me took the excitement and punch out of that evening.
