THE PAST
Throughout high school the only book I actually read was Animal Farm, all other assigned reading I would just search for summaries online or if it was more complicated I would skim through a cliff notes book explaining it. Reading sounded so boring. Maybe it’s because I grew up with a mom that loved to read that made it feel so uncool growing up. I’m sorry but what teenager admits to wanting to be just like their mom. Now as I grow up I realize my mom is pretty dang smart, funny, and awesome so why not give reading a try.
THE PRESENT
I was working full time and attending night school, so once I graduated my evenings went from going to school and studying to all this empty freedom. My dilemma became figuring out a hobby to enjoy during my new found spare time. My first year I think I might have watched everything Netflix had to offer…the good, the bad, and some downright horrible never should have been produced awkwardly bad movies and shows. I might be caught re-watching a few of my favorites like Breaking Bad and Orange is the New Black though.
When my siblings and I finally moved out my mom started working as a librarian to fill her time. She’s a speed reader and very diverse in her portfolio of genres; she’s the perfect librarian. She’s also the perfect resource for finding a good starter book. I read my first book for fun in 2015 by James Patterson, the Honeymoon series and since then I can’t finish books fast enough. I’m growing in my author collection and welcome any recommendations. I review and record every book I read on GoodReads. Like mother like daughter. I was told "if you don’t like reading, you're doing it wrong". I've come to find that very true.
THE FUTURE
What makes this the perfect hobby for me is my job, which requires me to travel about eight months of the year, so I have a lot of down time (delayed flights and weekends stuck in hotels). Before this job I hadn't even explored my hometown of Houston very well, so I was excited for the chance to get paid to see the world. On the road I read about two to three books a week and at home with my chaos I read at least one a week and mostly am caught listening to audio books as I run around doing errands. I can't wait to share my life with you through the books I read.
